Born in Geneva, the harpsichordist Vital Julian Frey trained with Christine Schornsheim and Robert Hill. Christophe Rousset and Gustav Leonhardt also exerted formative influence on him.
In his successful concert activities as a soloist, he makes a decisive contribution to the repositioning of the harpsichord on the classical music scene. He has performed at the Lucerne Festival, the Leipzig Bachfest, the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, the Bach Festival in Thuringia, Les Muséiques Basel and the Würzburg Mozartfest. He has additionally performed in numerous radio recordings for DRS2, SWR2, BR, the BBC and France Musique.
Particular popularity is enjoyed by Frey's workshops for children and juveniles, which he offers in concerts and through which he has given many children a new insight into the harpsichord.
In addition to concentrating mainly on music from early Baroque to Viennese Classicism, Vital Frey is also involved in crossover (flamenco for example), with the organ and in arts management.
Vital and the Lucerne Festival Strings
Vital Frey is the only «non-string» artist in the Lucerne Festival Strings, of which he has been a permanent member since 2007. As an expert in his field, the ensemble has learnt to value him as a great enrichment for the chamber orchestra repertoire with obbligato harpsichord. The soloists with whom the orchestra performs also value him as a virtuosic, inspired and stylistically authentic partner who has been with the ensemble for many years.
